For those concerned that music videos are losing their meaning, rest assured that in Amaarae’s universe, they still hold their value. The Ghanaian-American burgeoning superstar shared her latest single “Co-Star” along with a music video for the song, both a throwback and departure from reality. Directed by Lauren Dunn, the video sees Amaarae alongside The Clermont Twins and other cameos in a video game-like environment. Embodying characters known as “The Zodiacs,” Amaarae and company compete as different zodiac signs in a battle for swag supremacy, which the lead artist has the clear upper hand in. As she wordplays through astrological alliances, the song takes shape as an identity-affirming testimony of Amaarae’s smoothly sensual artistry. At its core, “‘Co-Star’ is a fun song about star signs! I wanted to give people something cute and flirty for the summer,” Amaarae says of the track. “Astrology is such a huge part of our youth culture, it felt like a missed opportunity to not lean into that and give the girls an anthem that reads and celebrates them all at once! The video is amazing too! Having some of my favorite women in the whole wide world represent themselves in such an iconic way. The Clermont Twins are such an iconic duo. Also Biba! Deto! Moyo! Bijou & Chi are such a huge part of alternative African culture. These are the tastemakers of our time! It’s really so amazing to bring them all together.”
Along with new music, Amaarae fans learned the release date of Fountain Baby, Amaarae’s upcoming album due June 9th. The project will also include recent single “Reckless and Sweet”, along with more genre-bending and seductively enthralling music from one of today’s most visionary artists. Her meteoric rise isn’t complete yet, with “Co-Star” proving that there are even more levels for Amaarae to tap into.
