Starting off with a rhythmic bass synth and punchy snare, “coldasice” by garbagebarbie is a track that builds upon catchy guitar riffs and cheeky lyrics, creating a playful story and double entendre between two people who know how the other feels in a blossoming relationship. As the pre-chorus goes, “I’ve been in love maybe once or twice, now I can’t breathe when you say goodbye”; the chorus sings as a proclamation like a secret knowing. “I need your lovin’ / I need your time / Won’t you hold me? I’m coldasice / If you got an answer, God give a sign / It’s no secret, I can read your eyes.” While “coldasice” is used by one person as a pick-up line in wanting to be held, the use of “coldasice” is also used to describe the other as aloof. In the end, it’s this idea of simply just feeling and knowing where a relationship is going, even when it’s hard to describe in words.

My favorite part of this track is the production in the second verse. The riff of electric guitar and claps cutting off the verse mid-way after “‘cause I -” , conveying a feeling of electricity or giddiness that you feel in place of what the lyrics would be. When you reach the bridge, it slows down the chorus painting this emotion of dreamy lightheartedness.

With a reputation of sold out shows every month this year including their more recent show at The Echo this summer, garbagebarbie is a local Los Angeles band building a community of listeners who eagerly wait for them to drop more shows to listen to them live. And as I look forward for more music to drop and experience them live myself, you can catch them at The Paramount in Los Angeles this winter, on December 7th.
