In classical composition or poetry, an elegy is a mournful piece that expresses grief over a lost loved one. Jean Dawson's “Die For Me” is most certainly an elegy with a modern twist, exploring mortality and intimacy over a beautiful dark piano instrumental with lush orchestral and electronic flourishes. Like his three-track EP, Boohoo, the track showcases new heights of artistic maturity and technical complexity for Dawson. His talent for creating dazzling compositions has not gone unrecognized; in fact, he was recently tapped to help arrange portions of Beyoncé’s groundbreaking album, Cowboy Carter. 

“Die For Me” features an eagerly anticipated collaboration between Jean Dawson and Lil Yachty following their successful European tour together. The track questions loyalty and love being put to the ultimate test: Would you die for me? The sobering tone is matched by the haunting instrumental that makes you feel like you’re in a Gothic cathedral. Dawson experiments with new vocal deliveries, while Yachty delivers a quality, heartfelt verse. It’s a phenomenal single that has me even more excited for Dawson’s upcoming album set to release later this year.
