I have absolutely loved all three of Johan Lenox singles off of his upcoming album What Do You Wanna Be When You Grow Up, but “I’m A Mess” featuring Lancey Foux might just be my favorite. Lancey’s unmistakable voice perfectly meshes with Johan’s ever growing vocal talent – which of course is over a hip hop instrumental influenced by some signature strings.
Johan takes the first chorus and verse while Lancey adds some flair with the ad libs – a fitting concept as Johan sings, “I’m a mess / But I do it with a little finesse.” Johan goes on to portray a scene where he is drunk and wrecking havoc. Between “Knocking out glasses like an asshole,” and being a “hazard on the dance floor,” he is able to experience a rare moment of being carefree. However, this is not a step in the positive direction, as he concludes his verse by realizing he “is not growing up at all this time.”
Lancey Foux follows this up by delivering a captivating rendition of the hook followed by a silky smooth verse before the two team up for the final hook. This is definitely one of the more unexpected collaborations this year, but is certainly one of my favorites. Listen to the new track below:
