I was going to preface this article by explaining the “Montero” music video to my readers, but decided it was a waste of time, considering you’ve probably already seen it. The king of viral hits is back at it, and he doesn’t care what you think.
From stripper poles, to lap dances with the devil, to tight short shorts, Lil Nas X is unapologetically proving that the queer community can freely express themselves in a historically homophobic industry. In the past, queer artists were forced to remain closeted in their music, but Lil Nas X is loudly paving the way toward a more accepting future. Alluding to religious scriptures that refute gay practices, Lil Nas X pokes fun, and makes sure to grab your attention.
In regards to the video, Lil Nas X wrote, "this will open doors for many other queer people to simply exist. You see this is very scary for me, people will be angry, they will say I’m pushing an agenda. But the truth is, I am." Lil Nas X has been nothing but transparent with his fans since coming out, and this video is another step in becoming a trailblazer for the queer community in entertainment.
