You may recognize the blue-haired R&B phenom from his Sheesh Artist Takeover, but today lilspirit makes his 2021 return with his edgy new single "4ever."
Fresh off his performance on Rolling Loud's "Loud Stream" lineup on Wednesday, the Internet Money Records/10K Projects signee reveals an elevated sound from what his debut album american spirit presented in 2020. "4ever" starts off with sunset guitar chords – quickly becoming a staple of Internet Money's sound, as it reminds me of the collective's hit "Lemonade," and within 35 seconds, spirit's sultry vocal tone is greeted with an immersive, hyperpop-esque explosive drop. While feeling fully stimulated within the production, spirit's vocal becomes distorted in harmony with the gut-wrenching bassline, as he unleashes emotion about a previous relationship, singing:
"This is the end of you and me forever,
I f–king hate you, so no we cannot be together,
I know you'll find someone different, but you know that I'm better,
Oh baby this is the end of you and me forever."
If you tuned into Rolling Loud's livestream, you would have noticed lilspirit preview this track in his performance, and to confirm – this song goes hard live. What's most impressive to me, is how lilspirit's sound is evolving, having tracks vocally driven with alluring pop and R&B sensibilities, yet seamlessly owning a grittier, trap-influenced lane as well. spirit writes some of the catchiest hooks I've come across, and although this newly revealed sound differs from his previous releases, it still maintains many of the same hit-making ingredients that put the young artist on release radars worldwide last year – and my personal top five most-listened to artists on Spotify in 2020.
