This week was a fantastic week for artists releasing debut projects, as RAYE and Ebony Riley both released two long-awaited projects. Babebee also released a fantastic EP along with Enchanting and Dreamville releasing some hard-hitting singles. As always, I want to highlight the producers who made these songs and projects possible below:
If there is anybody that stuck to their plan A in life, it is Grammy Award winning producer, Mike Sabath, who passed on going to Harvard to pursue his career in the music industry. It has paid dividends, as the Los Angeles based producer has put together some big moments in pop working with artists such as Lizzo, Shawn Mendes, Jonas Brothers, and most recently RAYE on her long-awaited debut project, My 21st Century Blues. which has a beautiful blend of R&B and pop fused together making for a blissful listening experience.
My favorite producers are ones who have built with an artist from the start, and in this case, it is Pittsburgh’s Christo and JID. Christo is responsible for much of JID’s discography and has played a monumental role for Dreamville, as he has produced their biggest hit, “Under The Sun.” Most recently, Christo hit big on a sync placement on the Creed III film releasing February 27 with the song “Ma Boy,” by Dreamville, JID, and Lute. This is another monumental moment in Christo’s already extremely successful career.
Atlanta based producer, Coupe, is another example of a producer finding success in the music industry from building organically with another artist like he did with Young Nudy. This time around, he produced for up and coming superstar Enchanting on her recent single “Love Shit.” The song has an ethereal vibe with an ambient guitar loop that plays throughout, which leaves Enchanting room to showcase her impeccable vocals. Coupe always curates the best possible production for whoever he works with and allows artists such as Young Nudy, Enchanting, and SwaVay to keep innovating their sound.
It has been four years in the making, but R&B singer Ebony Riley’s debut EP, ebony is finally here and Grammy nominated and ASCAP award-winning producer, Shea Taylor, played a substantial role in her luscious project. He produced the last four tracks on the EP, which were the ones I thought stood out most. His ability on the keys is undeniable and the ear candy he adds to the instrumentals on songs such as “Cry” pushes her sound forward. The California based producer and songwriter has worked with the likes of Ariana Grande, Frank Ocean, Beyonce, and Mac Miller to name a few. Taylor continues to cement his legacy as a powerhouse in R&B and music all together.
One of my favorite new artists is Babebee who is already having a breakout year just over a month in. They recently released their seven song EP, “tainted in our memories” and Canadian producer, Simon M — also known as poisoned cheeto — produced six of the seven track, contributing heavily to the progression of Babebee’s progressive sound. Simon M continues to push the hyperpop sound forward with his help on this project. The array of layers and the clear attention to detail is evident on this project and it is clear Simon M is on the brink of stardom as a producer.
