Porsh Bet$ is an artist you definitely want to get to know. In the past few months, he released a number of tracks, including his breakout single "Peanut Butter," revealing his knack for catchy songwriting. After the success of his singles, fans have been highly anticipating a project, and we’re excited because the time is finally here. Take a glimpse into the talent behind the name, as we help celebrate the release of his debut EP, I Used To Think Forever, out today.

Hey hey! Just want to start off by saying – we’re so excited to have you on Sheesh and to get to know you! To start off, tell me a little bit about you and your music background.

I have no music background but I’ve always been a big music head. I would listen to whatever was around me, my first memories are watching Micheal Jackson videos with my mom, then I started on LimeWire looking for my own music and it was kinda over from there. Growing up in a lot of different places definitely influenced what I like. Being from Harlem, rap was always around, but then going to school in Massachusetts, I spent a lot of time in cars listening to the radio, you know? That’s just pop music.

What made you want to become a musician?

I kinda just fell into it, I never did anything musical really until about 2 years ago. Then I started playing around with YouTube beats and Logic when I got a MacBook for college. Somehow we ended here.

Can you share with us a little bit about how you found your overall sound as a musician? How have you developed that sound? Who are some artists you’ve drawn inspiration from?

Making really bad music actually helped me find my sound. I feel like at first you kinda try to mimic artists you look up to instead of letting them just influence you. Once I started being honest with myself, that I couldn’t be the next PARTYNEXTDOOR or Playboi Carti, my music got a lot better. Anyone who is a good songwriter I kinda look up to like; Ed Sheeran, Bruno Mars, Frank Ocean, those guys. Then I just found out I really love guitars and boom that’s my sound.

What is something that no one knows about you? Do you have any hobbies or interests outside of music?

No one knows that I’ve had like 12 jobs since I was 14. That’s a long story but yea I used to go to high school with a duffel bag of snacks and sell it to kids in the hallway. I just got a kitten so he’s probably gonna be who I spend a lot of time with. For hobbies, I don't know if these count but I like to play basketball when I can, any kind of traveling, but I rather drive than fly, the beach is cool, hikes and long walks by myself to listen to music. I think I’m a pretty fire cook too.

After the drop of your song “Peanut Butter,” I was so eager for you to release another track. I heard your new song “Handle” and watched the music video and you definitely exceeded my expectations. Can you tell me a little bit about the making of this track and the inspiration behind both!

I wrote "Handle" after first moving to LA, and going to a couple parties. It was fun, but sometimes it got to a point where I felt too outta control. I’d consider myself as an extroverted introvert, either I’m out having a good time or I just get anxiety outta nowhere and want to go home. I really wanted to have a party vibe for this video, but when we shot this last November stuff covid was still uncertain and there weren’t vaccines yet so that wasn’t really possible. I ended up running around LA “losing my mind” after waking up from a bad trip at a party. I’ve probably watched Euphoria like 3 times so that inspired the trippy makeup I wore in the video.

Your EP I Used to Think Forever is out today. How did you come up with this name? Tell us about this project and how it came to fruition!

Honestly, I thought it just sounded cool at first. But it’s fasho become more meaningful. The title really says it best. I would be in moments or situations where I was down bad and used to think things would never get better. I’m a big daydreamer. This project is about my growing pains, personal experiences & relationships, dealing with anxiety and self doubt. Some of the songs on this EP are from 2 years ago, like 2019, when I was in a completely different headspace, so listening to it now, I have a whole new appreciation for it. This is my first EP so it’s a lil rough around the edges but I think that’s cool, it allows me space to evolve as an artist.

I saw that two of your tracks on the new EP, “Whatever” and “November Rain,” have music videos accompanying them. I see that you co-directed them too: you’re a man of many talents! Can you share how you guys came up with the ideas for these songs and videos? How did you bring your visions to life?

Yea I’m always involved with the music video treatments. In my eyes, the visuals are just as important as the music. If you ever come to the studio with me, I’m always talking about what the video for whatever song I’m working on should be, in a way it helps me come up with lyrics sometimes too. With this I just thought some kind of mysterious backpack thing would be cool and I just built the plot around there. My friend Elena who shot and edited it helped me flesh it out a lil more too. I want to leave it up to interpretation for the viewer to figure out what the story is about.

What is one of your favorite moments you’ve had as a musician so far?

Fasho. When Elton John played "Apple Eyes" on his radio station. That was wild. He said my name and all that with his accent, I love him forever.

Are there any musicians that you dream of working with one day or any venues or festivals that you dream of performing at?

SZA, A$AP Rocky and Clairo. I don’t know how, when, where, or why, but I think I could make something cool with one of them. I’d want Tyler, the Creator to produce a song, maybe even a whole project for me and definitely playing his festival Camp Flog Gnaw is a dream. Coachella would be nice too.

Where do you see yourself musically in 5 years? 10 years?

In 5 years I see myself a couple albums deep, doing me, just tryna do things I think are dope still. I guess in 10 years I’ll be an OG lol, so that’s weird to think about but maybe I’ll start a label or something. I wanna eat cereal out of a Grammy so I’m gonna figure out how to get one of those.

Your vibe is so upbeat and unique, and I am truly excited to hear what you have for us next – can you tell us a little bit about what’s in store after this EP for your fans? What do you have planned?

I’ve been working on a tape, a mixtape kinda thing. I’ve grown into myself and gotten more comfortable as a person and an artist since making this first EP. With this tape, I’m tryna make everything a lil more polished, I’m gonna show people I can do more. Vote for Porsh.
