The United Nations Declares The Weeknd as the World Food Programme Goodwill Ambassador

From achieving chart-topping success as an artist, to starting a major record label, The Weeknd has successfully navigated many different endeavors. While these successes cannot be understated, his most recent achievement may be the most important of his career.

On October 7th, 2021, The Weeknd was announced as the United Nations World Food Programme Goodwill Ambassador. This came after years of donating to numerous humanitarian causes across the world. Most recently, The Weeknd – born Abel Tesfaye – donated $1 million to the United Nations World Food Programmes’ operations in Ethiopia.

After being appointed as the new ambassador, the 31-year-old artist spoke to the importance of the United Nations World Food Programme. “The U.N. World Food Programme is doing urgent and important work to change and save lives on a daily basis and I feel passionately about addressing world hunger and helping people in need,” he said. “Our partnership is an authentic extension of all our efforts and intentions to help those in need and bring an end to so much suffering.”

The Weeknd’s new position will undoubtedly benefit the U.N. World Food Programme as the outspoken artist has incredible influence over millions of people. “Whether he is performing or speaking out about global hunger, The Weeknd’s voice is powerful and inspiring,” said World Food Program USA President and CEO Barron Segar.

The Weeknd has proven to be more than just an artist. With this new accomplishment, he shows just how effective he can be in any walk of life.
