Saying the quiet things out loud takes some guts - though it all comes out a bit easier when you have a parade of guitars and drums supporting you. In service of pure catharsis, Swedish band Girl Scout is careful but blunt in their sentiment on new single “Honey”: “No, she’s not a bad person / But I think it’s time / To take a look at your friend from the outside / I know it hurts to see but only for a little while,” bemoans the bridge, angsty in delivery but sincere in messaging. To make an objective assessment of a subjective relationship is a big request, but is a matter of necessity according to Girl Scout’s Emma Jansson. “‘Honey’ is about the bittersweet experience of close friends growing apart, heartache, and the inevitability to keep everyone in your life at the same time,” the lead singer explains. “The lyrics delve into the complex emotions of frustration, concern, and helplessness while witnessing the imbalance of that relationship.” Originally written as an acoustic number, the tension inherent in the subject matter is better conveyed through the rock-tinged approach that Girl Scout has branded as their own. With production from Alex Farrar, “Honey” finds its footing early and is only invigorated as it develops. The accompanying music video for the track follows a similar tempo, beginning as a straight-forward and steady performance before spiraling into a rocking, wringing-on-the-floor rush of emotional release.

There’s more coming from Girl Scout very soon: along with the single, it was announced that their third EP Headache will arrive on November 8th. “‘Headache’ is AAAAAAAAH!!!!!!,” Jansson said in anticipation of the project. “THAT feeling. Straight-up hate and frustration. Feeling hurt and feeling funny about people. Feeling funny about life as a whole. Consider our gears ground. (But in a funny way).” Life sure is a funny thing, even when the jokes are cruel - Girl Scout’s sound has just the right disposition to distract listeners into having a rollicking good time with their tracks.

“Honey” was debuted early and often while Girl Scout was on stage opening for Alvvays over the summer, and the song is poised to become a fan favorite for those new and old. Headache will be the culmination of what has been a busy but banner year for the band, who will continue to perform throughout Europe early in 2025. Prior release “I Just Needed You To Know” will also hold a place on the EP, alongside 3 new tracks that will help to satisfy the demand for one of indie-rock’s most coveted new acts.
