I was bit by the Medium Build bug a few months back after hearing “Never Learned To Dance” on my friend's playlist, and I am happy to say, he is so back on his new single “In My Room.” After countless times of screaming his line about ‘seeing the princess bride a thousand f*cking times,’ I simply just wanted to scream more lines that are relatable because he makes it that way.
One of the founding rules of stand up comedy is to make the specific feel universal, and the more music that I hear, the more I feel the exact same way about that principle within songs. To the listeners benefit and possibly MB’s internal detriment, that’s exactly what we get on “In My Room.” The song began as an experiment on how to write a silly song, but blossomed into a long form exposé about navigating what it’s like growing up. He leans into the way we all felt when we would try to impress our friends with prized possessions like a poster of the whole Simpsons cast, or picking our favorite movie to quote as The Matrix in a bid to feel unique and cool.
In traditional Medium Build style we are brought into the mind of a chronic overthinker, and simultaneously are given the grace of knowing we’re not alone in the nuances of human existence. His music always feels like he’s talking straight to one of his closest friends, and that leads to such a special connection that can be felt during every listen.
